Peritoneal mesothelioma, a cancer of the lining of the abdominal cavity, is less common than the pleural form, comprising about one fifth to one third of the total number of diagnosed cases of mesothelioma. According to the SEER (Surveillance, Epidemiology, and final results) database, these diagnoses were about 54.7 per cent of men against 45.3 per cent of women; the average age is 65-69. The latency period appears to be shorter for people exposed to asbestos symptoms 20-30 years after exposure to the latency period of 30-40 years often associated with pleural mesothelioma.
